Budget challenges going viral on TikTok: which ones are actually achievable?
Share
TikTok is full of saving tips, but there's one trend that really stands out for us: the budget challenge . From colorful envelopes to dice-based savings games, it's clear: saving is back to being fun. But are these popular TikTok challenges also achievable in real life? We dove in!
What is a budget challenge anyway?
A budget challenge is simply a challenge that helps you set aside money in a fun and structured way. Think of saving a fixed amount each week, or putting that amount in a piggy bank every time you skip coffee. TikTok is full of it, especially in combination with cash stuffing —a method where you physically put your money in envelopes to control your spending.
We encountered these TikTok budget challenges the most
Here are a few budget challenges that have gone viral and why they're so popular:
1. The 100 envelopes challenge
You take 100 envelopes, number them 1 to 100, and draw one at random each day (or week). You put the amount printed on the envelope inside. At the end of the process, you'll have saved €5,050.
Our tip: The 100 envelopes are also available in €5 and €10 editions to make it easier to achieve. You can find the variations here .
2. The 52-week challenge
Each week of the year, you set aside an amount corresponding to the week number. Week 1 is €1, week 2 is €2, and so on. After 52 weeks, you'll have saved €1,378.
This challenge is perfect if you prefer to build up slowly. You can also reverse it: start with the highest amount and end with the lowest. This way, it gets easier as the year progresses. You can find the 52-week challenge here.
3. The no spend challenge
For a month, you won't spend any money on unnecessary things. Only fixed expenses and essential groceries are allowed.
Sounds strict? It is. But also refreshing. You'll quickly become aware of your impulse purchases. Try a "no-spend weekend" to start small. Use a no-spend tracker to track your progress.
4. Save with a die
Every day or week, you roll a die. The number you roll determines how much you save. Want to make it a bit more exciting? Multiply the number by €2 or even €5.
What works (and what doesn't)?
TikTok often makes it look easy, but in real life, you also encounter obstacles. This is what we noticed:
What works well:
- Visual saving motivates. Filling envelopes gives a concrete sense of progress.
- Many challenges can be flexibly adapted to your own budget.
- Work with personalized savings goals for extra motivation
What works less well:
- You have to go to the ATM for it
- Some challenges (like the 100 envelopes) can be overwhelming when working with large amounts.
- It takes discipline. TikTok makes it look playful, but it's serious work to keep it up.
How to make a budget challenge feasible
Want to get started, but in a way that truly suits your life? Here are our tips:
1. Start small
You really don't have to start with €100 a week. Even €1 a day equals €365 a year. Choose what feels right for you.
2. Use cash stuffing
Putting physical money in envelopes offers more control than using an app on your phone. Check out our A6 budget binders for a compact and organized system.
3. Personalize your challenge
Do you have a specific savings goal, like a vacation or a savings account? Tailor your challenge accordingly. For example, use our vacation savings tracker or create your own labels.
4. Make it visible
Use a tracker, planner, or even a savings card on your refrigerator. You can also keep track digitally, but physically checking things off remains more motivating for most people.
Our favorite TikTok budget challenge
If we were to recommend just one challenge to start with, it would be the 52-week challenge . You start slowly and gradually build up. Plus, it's easy to combine with other savings goals.
